Kmart sparked a sort of lighthearted controversy by placing a Christmas Layaway spot in September. They took a needling for the early placement from the late-night shows, particularly The Tonight Show. So the following September when they ran another Layaways spot in September, they pre-empted the critics by assuring everyone that this was “Not A Christmas Commercial.” Which, of course, it most certainly was.
